The AVTpro Audio Description Exam is designed to test your ability to draft high-quality audio description scripts in order to make content accessible to people who are blind or have vision loss. Its goal is to ensure that you possess the skills, knowledge and creativity needed to craft clear, engaging, and accurate descriptions that can enhance the audience’s experience across various media, including film and television.
About
the EXAM
The AVTpro Audio Description Certification
is designed to test the linguistic and cultural knowledge of your working languages as well as the basics of subtitling practice through a series of automated tasks. It is a prerequisite to taking the AVTpro Subtitle Translation and the AVTpro Subtitle Creation certifications.
Upon successfully completing the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam, you are eligible to register for the AVTpro Subtitle Translation and/or the AVTpro Subtitle Creation certifications.
How to take the AVTpro

Sign Up
When you sign up for the exam, you will be provided with a unique link that you will have to use to take the exam.
Advance Preparation
We strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself well with the Style Guide of your working language before sitting the exam. You can download it by clicking on the ‘Style guide’ button above.
The Exam
There are four tasks in total in the AVTpro Subtitling Basics exam, all of which you must pass in order to be eligible to sit the AVTpro Subtitle Translation and/or the AVTpro Subtitle Creation Certification.
The tasks cover the following areas:
- Theory of subtitling
- Knowledge of English
- Knowledge of Translation
- Knowledge of Subtitling
Results
Within minutes of you completing the test, you will receive an email with your scoring as well as confirmation of your eligibility to register for the AVTpro Subtitle Translation certification and/or the AVTpro Subtitle Creation certification, if applicable. As soon as you receive the notification, you will be able to register for either of the two certifications.

Q: Can I take a practice test?
There is no practice test available for the AVTpro exams. Applicants who register for the Subtitling Basics Exam or any of the Certifications are expected to have completed relevant studies and/or have professional experience in the task at hand.
Q: How can I demonstrate that I’ve earned the AVTpro certification?
Once you have passed the exam successfully, you will receive a diploma together with a personalized AVTpro Certified Seal containing your name, the name of the certification as well as a unique registration number.
Q: What is the cost of the exam and what does it cover?
You will find information about the cost of each AVTpro exam at the top of each exam page.
The cost of the exam covers the platform maintenance and the evaluator fee (where applicable). The cost of the design of the exam itself is covered by industry sponsors who acknowledge the need for a professional certification in media localization and who are interested in recruiting professionals who can demonstrate their expertise with an industry-approved certification.
